Overview
Dr Weaver is a CASA-designated ophthalmologist on the Gold Coast. He provides specialist eye assessments for pilots and other aviation workers who need medical certification from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
Pilots, air traffic controllers and other aviation workers who need an eye assessment for their CASA medical can be seen locally.
What is a CASA-designated ophthalmologist?
CASA authorises certain eye specialists to carry out eye assessments for aviation workers and to send reports to CASA and to Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs). You may need one if you have an eye condition, have had eye surgery, or need specialist eye clearance for your Class 1, 2 or 3 medical.
Services
- Eye reports for CASA: formal specialist reports against CASA vision standards for Class 1, 2 and 3 medicals
- Before and after eye surgery: fitness to fly after cataract surgery, lens exchange, retinal surgery, laser eye surgery and other eye procedures
- Vision and glasses testing: distance and near vision, with and without glasses, to CASA standards
- Visual field testing: an automated test of side vision for licensing requirements
- Colour vision testing: Ishihara and other tests required by CASA
- Eye conditions: glaucoma, retinal disease, cataract, corneal problems and other conditions that may affect flight safety
- Return to flying: assessment after an eye condition, surgery or treatment
- Working with your DAME: clear, timely reports to support your medical certificate
Eye surgery and returning to flying
Pilots who have had eye surgery, including cataract surgery, lens exchange, retinal surgery or laser eye surgery, need CASA clearance before they fly again. Dr Weaver provides the check-up after surgery and the formal CASA report, to support a safe and timely return to flying when it is clinically appropriate.
CASA vision standards
CASA sets standards for sharpness of vision, side vision and colour vision for each class of medical certificate. Class 1, for commercial pilots, is the strictest. Dr Weaver is familiar with the current standards, and his reports address the standards for your certificate class.
If your DAME has referred you, please bring the referral and any previous eye records to your appointment.
