Questions

Seeing a retina specialist

What does a retina specialist do?

A retina specialist (vitreoretinal surgeon) is an ophthalmologist with additional fellowship training in diseases of the retina, macula and vitreous gel. This includes surgery for retinal detachment, macular holes and epiretinal membranes, and treatment of macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease with injections and laser.

Do I need a referral to see a retina specialist?

A referral from your GP or optometrist is needed to claim Medicare rebates. Urgent referrals, such as a suspected retinal detachment, are seen as a priority; please call the rooms so the referral can be triaged.

What should I do about sudden floaters or flashes?

A sudden shower of new floaters, flashing lights or a shadow in your vision can mean a retinal tear or detachment. During business hours call the rooms on (07) 5612 5200 the same day. After hours, go to the emergency department at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Where does Dr Weaver perform retinal surgery?

Private retinal surgery is performed at Miami Private Hospital, Pacific Private Hospital and Tweed Day Surgery. Public retinal surgery is performed at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Where are the consulting rooms?

Dr Weaver consults at 5/140 Robina Town Centre Drive, Robina, and 56 Wharf Street, Tweed Heads, Monday to Friday.
